Answers for all the Newbies

UPDATED Sun Jan 19 23:08:16

I’ve been on these boards for about 2 weeks now, and I think I’ve finally gotten my head around most of the slang and abbreviations used here. It can be extremely confusing for newcomers, so I’m hoping this guide will help. I hope that by providing this resource we won’t have to keep interrupting other threads just to ask what something means. So, without further ado, here’s your one-stop guide:

Abbreviations
OT – Off topic
NM – No more or No message. When used in the header it means there’s nothing in the body of the text to read
NT – No text
TORN - refers to a website, www.theonering.net
EE – the extended edition DVD of one of the movies (currently only applies to “The Fellowship”)
LOTR – Lord of the Rings
FOTR – Fellowship of the Rings
TTT – The Two Towers
ROTK – Return of the King

Terms
Troll – A big, ugly monster who likes to jump out of the shadows just to attack and insult other posters. Their only goal is to stir up trouble and annoy us. Their comments usually lack any intelligence.

Ringnuts – People who loved not only the books but also the films.

Purists – People who loved the books and have a bone to pick with the films because some things were changed from book to film.

Bump – This isn’t so much a term as it is an action. People “bump” messages to keep them at the top of the pile. It’s a quick way to keep the discussion fresh without having to add anything.

How do I put those cool smile icons in my message?
When you compose a message, there will be a small link entitled “markup enabled” next to where it says “Body text.” If you click on this link, a page will pop up explaining what codes to include in your message to jazz it up a little. In addition to the smiley faces, there are also codes for creating a link, playing with the text (such as making it italic), and quoting other posts. It works a little like writing html.

That is all I can think of. I know some of the abbreviations I included are self-explanatory (I’ve never seen anyone ask what LOTR stands for, for example), but I wanted this list to be comprehensive. If I have left anything out or have gotten anything wrong, please feel free to correct me. I hope this helps everyone!

I have always thought that NM meant 'no message'. Not any difference though. I also recommend use of the 'search' feature found in the message board navigation bar, especially since the board is so large.

So that's what OT meant...was too similar to OTT ie Over The Top so I was confused by that. Cheers

And can I be a Ringnut?

You might want to include TORN = theonering.net on the definitions list. I, at least, was confused by that one for awhile.

Thanks. I had no idea what TORN stood for. To tell the truth, I wasn't even sure if it was an abbreviation or not! Definitely a confusing one. I've updated the original post to include it.

Here'a post with more links, and TORN is one of them.

It's working- I'm trying to save you some work, so you don't have to relist all the links that are in it.

Thanks for that, but you didn't answer the big one I wonder about, though it's probably incredibly obvious.

What does LOL mean?

LOL = Lots of laughs (as I've always understood it).

I know that there are other abbreviations like that one that I didn't include. I decided to limit the list to only those abbreviations that this board created. LOL, IMHO, LMAO, etc. have been around for awhile and I've seen them used in other online conversations & e-mails, so that's why they weren't included. I did think about putting some of them in here, but decided against it. Maybe that wasn't the best decision, but I was afraid that if I tried to include ALL the abbreviations out there that the list would get out of hand! Of course, I probably goofed up by including NM and OT - I had never seen those two before, but that doesn't mean that they didn't already exist!

So, in case anyone out there is confused:
IMO = In my opinion
IMHO = In my humble opinion
LMAO = Laughed my a** off
WTF = What the f*ck
BTW = By the way

There's more, but I can't think of them right now, I'm too sleepy. Hope that helps.

Good-night!
What it means to me...

LOL - laugh out loud
LMAO - laughing my ass off
ROTFLMAO - rolling on the floor LMAO
IMO - in my opinion
IMHO - in my humble opinion
ITA - I totally agree

These are just a few that I've seen.

UPDATED Thu Feb 6 15:19:33

Well, I was a little bit confused with that term, because it seemed to me that it might also apply to people who loved either the books OR the movies. So before creating this thread, I put the question "What exactly IS a ringnut?" out there on the board. The answers I got back said that it was someone who liked BOTH. The people who answered seemed reliable to me, so that's why I put that definition here. Now it could be that not enough of the "old timers" saw my question before I created this thread. I'm willing to correct the problem if indeed I'm wrong. If anyone who has been around for awhile knows that my definition is wrong, please SPEAK UP! I've only been around for a month now, so I'm not going to pretend to be an authority on these matters.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Edit: Whoa... Wait a minute! I misread the date that you first joined, I thought it said 2003, making you as new as me. But I just realized it said 2002, so you are what I was referring to as an "old-timer" above (meant in a good way). Sorry about that! So, does that mean I have the wrong definition???

Somebody? Anybody?
