Spoiler/////////will not make much sense
I've been coming here a good while now. I have to say that as a randomly assembled group of JRRT fans the average intellegence, freindliness, warmth here is commendable, great , wonderful. Some regular posters are indeed scarily smart. A lot of people seem to stay here for a long time. That IMHO is due to the unique homliness of these boards. I just wonder as to the reasons for our solidarity, is this normal?, are we normal? Im wondering these things in a good, constructive wondering sort of way.
I rarely reply to the more intellectual threads, discussions of philosiphical pointers in Tolkiens writings and so on have little meaning for me personally, though I appreciate the differing insight. I seriously think this is due to being Irish where old fashioned values of family, love, duty and honour are still of utmost importance. Some of us still go to the bog to get winter fuel supplies in, some still fish and hunt, no evry neighbour by name. Some grow their own smoking materials, but thats a different story. This is why I love Tolkien. Irish people are essentially shire folk. In more developed countries the appeal of shire life attracts romantics such as my self to the lord of the rings. You all wish to be hobbits. We pretty much are. I personally know many people whose life consists of farming, gardening, smoking pipes, and going to ther green dragon (aka 'mike the pies') at night, before nipping off to save the world.
There is a huge range of contribution on these boards from silly flippancy (guilty) to deep intellectual thought (not so), I just marvel that the deep respect so evident among all ringnuts remains. My own personal choice to avoid the more intellectual threads is based on personal lack of belief in my ability to express. I enjoy reading threads from Aule, Paul H, Liananchin etc, but never get involved. Not cos I think they are smarter than me, but cos i use words like cos. Also being dyslesic makes one somewhat self aware of ones expressive shortcomings. Nonetheless I enjoy the valuable contribution of these threads.
I prefer the fun threads, where short, and therefore more easily spellchecked replies are the norm. I also love the comic contributions of Nastyboy, squirrel, Alizarin, Tubba ETC. The flexibility of such posters in being able to switch from serious to fun reflects my own, underutilised ability. Al et al., also can be very thought provikoking as and when they want, they can hold their own on the serious threads. I also like many threads from the younger contingent, but tend to avoid the "hoe can I make him / her like me" variety.
Im gonna stop naming names now, cos I got into trouble before for expressing personal preferences before, but can I just say that all ringnuts are marvellous people. If you are wondering if you qualify as a ringnut you probably dont. May I quote a great Irish playwrite and family friend Dr John B. Keane " if your a Kerryman, you dont brag about it. You know you have something over the rest of them and that's enough" For Kerryman insert ringnut. If of course one is blessed to be both from Kerry and a ringnut one is definately top bananna.
I dont really know where I'm going with this, so to surmise. I love ALL ringnuts and have hugely enjoyed your company. Being here has helped me develop as a person. Due to the anonymity [spelling] of the internet I can come here and have friends who need not be aware of other stuff [pretty well resolved] going on in my life. This has been a great haven. Thanks

I echo most of what you said matey - except the Oirish superiority plug of course
One thing I'd like to say though - although it's your choice where to post, I wish you weren't as bothered about your spelling and such...if there's one thing you should know after everything you've just said is that nobody here is quite that shallow; and unless you start writing like Da Vinci I'm sure we can handle anything you put out.
Don't get me wrong, I can see why you'd maybe be a bit self-concious in 'real life' (or maybe not, with all those drunken, doped up, pie eating, guinnes swilling sheep feckers ) but not on here mate...no need.

Your right Greg this is a great place with a real sense of comunity. I've learned so much about Tolkien's works here.
I post on some of the heavier thread, but probibly shouldn't. I have a bit of something called Central Auditory Processing Disorder, which lead to not being able to get my point across very well. It's a lot worse in person, i'm fine with people I've known for a long time, but sometimes people don't know how to take me. So I do like coming here. It's a social life, all my friends have moved away. I know people sometimes think I'm an idiot for what I post, but not many people say it. So you shouldn't let your Dyslexia stand in your way, I'll always be there to look stupider.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.I do not think they will sing to me.

I know what you mean, but I don't get into the philosophical threads because I'm not very philosophical and cannot add any depth to the discussion. I'm not a very long winded person; I like to keep things short, sweet, and to the point. I'm not a very eloquent writer and I write how I speak. Like you and others, I cannot get my point across very well. I totally admire those who are able to intelligently express themselves or write out long, philosophical threads, but I like shorter ones, better. Maybe I just don't have the patience to completely read a long thread...maybe I'm not smart enough to understand a philosophical thread. They just don't interest me. I like reading them, but not replying to them (most of the time).

on another note, did you used to go by a different moniker?

Used to be gregmcd101, got tired of being a number. As there are at least 100 regulars here, to raise it by even 2 points on average, would bring me to 300 + (+ alot ). Cheers

Greg...
1. Your writing above shows no lack of ability.
2. As much as I (and some other notables here) have a tendency to get longwinded (which is why I frequently # my points), you lose no points for spelling or grammar, and sometimes it is the short post that makes the thread. I can put up a windbaggy post, and have someone else read it and a a 10 word question, which changes, focuses or refocus the entire thread. Do not feel that you lack ability. We have never noticed any such lack in you, worthy of note, except when you have tossed back a couple too many at the pub.

Hi Greg. If you find something interesting, then say something. That's what makes this place great. Different opinions from people all over the world. Never be ashamed of expressing how you view something. You'd be surprised how important your voice can be. Thanks for the compliment, but speak up man!!!
|
|

Yeah - what Aule said.
He has expressed my own sentiments perfectly. Cheers - saved me a bit of typing (which, of course, I've just wasted on this......)
Did you get the second PM from me yesterday, about event horizons and suchlike? My PC was mid crash and I'm not sure if that got squeezed out before it threw its little legs in the air.

No, got the first one and replied with more questions. Answers apparently got sucked into a black hole. Basically about event horizons and the formation of putative wormholes by 2 black holes. In return if you ever need the low down on Hypoxanthine-Guanine Phosphoribosyltransferase or any some such you only need to ask. See, see I can use big words, i'm just a lazy sod

It was a fine reply, too. Perhaps slightly over long.
Would you like me to do another reply? I assume you would still like your questions answered!

I have the same problem as Greg sometimes. It can just be hard at times to find the words for my opinions even though I have them...often a big reason why I don't join in for the serious posts. I'll read them, but I also usually feel everyone has already contributed what I would add (which is when I might add an 'I agree' reply...). A hump I need to get over, but a hump for me nonetheless.

Greg, they are a pretty cluey lot here aren't they? Just when I got to thinking it was taxi drivers who knew everything I found this place and had to rethink.
I try to get involved in some of the deeper themes, but on days when I haven't had nearly enough nicotine or chocolate it just makes my brain wobble, so I scoot over to some of the lighter, fun stuff.
Having been a 'lurker' for a few months before I dived in I sense (and see) that people here are reasonable, reasoned, articulate, intelligent and fun and value input from all over.
Cheers

Well, to be fair that's because we regulars know that there are only actually a few posters on the board. For example, Aule is also Paul, athene, lkalliance, Wally and Broc; Nastyboy is also coolbananas, mentalcritic, and Azrael (but you'd expect an Aussie to have a split personality); legolas_of_mirkwood has my undying respect, because I think he's all the characters in the Insomniacs thread and the FOTJ ones!
Who did I miss, bigv - or should I say bigv, Tubba324, Wajz-the-White, gck1909 (yep, strange things going on there)?

I pretty much agree, though I come from a different background. Houston is one of the most polluted cities in the US, there are no rolling green hills anywhere within a 500-mile radius of the city (in other words, my home is not at all picturesque), and the most we grow here are trees, weeds, and shrubbery (very few have home gardens, thanks to Kroger, Randall's, and HEB).
Greg, you and I also differ in that I try to reply to the philosophical, serious threads, unless I agree with everything the person says. So, there is no point in replying if I don't have something to question. I do, however, wholly enjoy the funny posts.
I love this place!

Hey Greg!
I agree with everything you said in this post, except that bit about the "how can I make him/her like me" threads. I dont think Ive notice any (maybe 1!!) Well there arnt many anyway. Speaking of personal threads (as I kinda was!), you know you 'hideous dark elf' for my name on the name generator thingy? Well I put in my full name and got 'hideous dragon'!!! Maybe god is trying to tell me something
Anyway, I just wanted to say that I would have posted a post like this a while ago I just didnt know how to put it, and now all I have to do is say "Greg, I whole heartedly agree and couldnt have put it better myself".
Ive tried to join in on the more intellectual treads with not so wonderful results. Not becase Im unintelliget, but, as my tutors were constantly telling my at uni, because I do express myself very well! *Hey something in common...and Ive got Irish blood in me...whoa you could be my brother or something!!!!*
Anyway, thanks for a great heart warming post. Big (semi) Irish kisses to you

Great post, Greg! It's all true- this is a wonderful community of Ringnuts of all sorts, with a little niche for everyone. I think that's what keeps us coming back. Don't worry about those 'deep' posts- just plunge in. You've got some very fine ideas to share.

Greg, Really good post! As a descendent of the emerald isle I have to agree with you. I too rarely post to the intellectual posts as I lack the time to give that they deserve. But the fellowship here is OUTSTANDING! And it's great to have a place to pop in & be guaranteed a laugh, or bitch that ROTK won't be out for x number of days & not be looked at as a freak. Shoot, most of these people are so friendly they even welcome trolls.

Golly gee whizz, I'm flattered you think I'm funny. I half expect people to just think I'm bloody annoying! As for your not feeling confident enough to participate in the more philosophical threads, I completely understand where you're coming from. Greg - well thought out post. I agree - I ahve never found such a loving community of fun people to hang with on the internet. Even the other homeschoolers on another board I frequent don't have the homey feeling that I get here. And we have fun - we're not stuffy. Even the people who do post on the more philosophical posts find their way to the fun ones eventually. I rarely post on those, but always enjoy reading them (until I get lost and have to go soak my head cuz of the steam coming out of my ears - trying to think to hard and understand it all).
Anyway - I agree and thank you for writing such an admirable post - I love it here too.
